Vitamin C – Before diving into the benefits of Vitamin C, let us know some facts about our skin. The outermost layer of skin, epidermis, is a challenged environment for nutrient delivery as this layer is less connected with blood vessels, so comparatively, less nutrition from what we eat reaches this layer. The easiest way to provide nutrition to this layer is via topical application. But another challenge is that the epidermis is covered by a thin layer called ‘stratum corneum’. It acts as a barrier and provides us protection from outside environment. There are few compounds which can be transported across and into epidermis by diffusion. So, if you apply vitamin C directly onto skin, it is likely that not all will not reach the epidermis in active form. Hence, we have formulated L-ascorbic acid, an stabilized active form of Vitamin C, into capsules (microencapsulated), which is transported across the stratum corneum without degradation and damage, ensuring that all of it is available in the epidermis for its activity. Collagen production – Collagen is a type of protein which is most abundant structural protein in animals. Collagen is composed mainly of the amino acid glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline. The most important function of vitamin C is acting as a co-factor for the proline and lysine hydroxylases enzymes that stabilize the collagen molecule, and it also promotes collagen gene expression. It is very well documented in various studies that availability of Vitamin C stabilizes the function of collagen crosslinks formed by hydroxylases. Thus, giving the skin firmness, plump, reduced wrinkles and act as antiaging.
Anti-oxidant properties – Another important widely studied and proven benefit of Vitamin C is its antioxidant activity. Exposure to pollutants, UV rays, bacteria etc. triggers oxidation in our cells which produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS in excessive quantity is damaging to cellular function leading to compromised skin structure and increase in aging process. Vitamin C neutralizes the oxidants found in environmental pollutants and after exposure of UV radiation. Another important function of Vitamin C is that it regenerates oxidized Vitamin E thereby recycling Vitamin E and enhancing the overall antioxidant strength.
Melanin synthesis – Melanin is a brownish-black pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and irises of the eyes. The amount of melanin determines how dark skin, hair, and eyes are. Factors like genetics and sun exposure can affect how much melanin a person has. Vitamin C is shown in many studies to reduce the synthesis of melanin. This is achieved by interfering in the action of tyrosinase enzyme which is responsible for melanin pigment synthesis. Thus, it is used to reduce hyperpigmentation and dark spots and conditions like melasma.
Barrier function – Skin barrier is a must to defend us against external threats such as infectious agents, chemicals, toxicity and allergens. Barrier function depends on the strength of skin layers. Vitamin C is proved to strengthen the barrier function of skin. It increases the differentiation of the cells of the skin, and promotes the synthesis and organization of barrier lipids giving the skin layers strength thus providing protection against environmental damage.
Dry skin – Dry skin occurs mostly due to environmental changes in temperature, air flow and humidity which leads to alterations in the keratin synthesis (a type of skin protein) and lipid content in the skin. Alterations in skin environment depletes ceramides, natural moisturizing factors (NMF) which bind water in the stratum corneum and epidermal moisture channels. Vitamin C has been shown to increase the production of lipid content, ceramides and increase in differentiation of cells in skin thereby reducing the dryness and roughness of skin.
Chamomile (Anti-Irritant) – Chamomile is an herb that belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy or sunflower) plant family and is grown around the world. Chamomile extract penetrates deep in the skin and has shown in human volunteers to be excellent anti-inflammatory agent and exhibits the inhibition of Prostaglandins2 and COX-2 enzymes, enzymes that cause inflammation. In some studies, it has proven to calm, sooth and even reduce skin conditions like eczema. Most importantly, human studies have shown that chamomile has anti-anxiety properties. It contains apigenin, a compound that binds certain receptors in the brain which is responsible for sleep cycles.
Witch Hazel (Calming, Antibacterial) – It is a special ingredient to serve the sensitive skin with care which will sooth the redness caused by allergens and infective agents like bacteria. Sensitive skin is prone to redness and itchiness by both environmental and chemical stimulants. Witch hazel was shown to significantly reduce erythema induced by solar-simulated ultraviolet radiation and significantly reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL) compared to baseline levels in human volunteers. Interestingly, extracts of Witch Hazel examined for their inhibitory effects on bacterial species, showed inhibition of two bacterial species involved in skin infections, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. Interestingly, it has also shown antiviral activity. The possible action associated with the activity is attributed to tannic acid and gallic acid found in witch hazel which inhibits and binding of virus to host cells.
Green Tea (Detoxification) – Camellia sinensis (L.) or tea is used worldwide as a refreshing drink. It is also well known to clear toxicity from the body. The major alkaloid found in tea, caffeine, stimulates microcirculation in the skin, which in turn improves cell oxygenation and accelerates fat burning in skin cells. Burning of fat (lipolysis) is accelerated through the release of catecholamines. This inhibits fat accumulation by increased degradation of triglycerides. A clinical study conducted revealed an improvement in skin texture and appearance in volunteers after a 4-week application of gel containing green tea. In another clinical study green tea extracts applied to the forearm skin significant increased skin moisture and improved skin texture. Thus, green tea in our product will decrease the skin toxicity, increase skin oxygenation and can reduce accumulated fat, especially under the eyes.
Ferulic acid (Antioxidant enhancer) – Ferulic acid is commonly found in whole grains, spinach, parsley, grapes, and cereal seeds, mainly oats, rye, and barley. It is mainly an antioxidant which also enhances the properties of other antioxidants like Vitamin C and E. Its antioxidating properties are primarily related to scavenging of free radicals, binding metals, and prevention of lipid peroxidation. Ferulic acid is not only a free radical scavenger, but also an inhibitor of enzymes that catalyze free radical generation and an enhancer of scavenger enzyme activity. Furthermore, it also prevents damage caused by UV radiation induced oxidation. Studies in cultured human cells showed that ferulic acid, administered prior to exposure to UV radiation, significantly reduced its adverse effects by preventing UV-induced cell cycle alterations and DNA damage and regulates the expression of DNA repair genes. One of the most important benefits of ferulic acid is that it promotes formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) thus increasing blood supply to skin providing more oxygen and nutrition.
Niacinamide (Depigmentation, Yellow-brown spots) – Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a form of vitamin B. It plays an important role in energy metabolism. Topical application of niacinamide has a stabilizing effect on epidermal barrier function and prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Niacinamide leads to an increase in keratin synthesis, has a stimulating effect on ceramide synthesis, speeds up the differentiation of keratinocytes. In various clinical studies, in ageing skin, topical application of niacinamide improves the surface structure and smoothens out wrinkles. Niacinamide also showed an improvement in hyperpigmentation, irregular shaped spots, and hydration. Niacinamide reduces the transfer of packets containing melanin pigment (melanosome) from melanocytes to surrounding skin cells (keratinocytes), thus reducing accumulation of excess melanin pigments. Very interestingly, a study involving UVA/UVB sunscreen with niacinamide on Japanese women showed significant reduction in hyperpigmentation and reduced yellowish-brown spots.
Hyaluronic acid HA (Water Retention) – Hyaluronic acid is a natural polysaccharide and is one of the main components of the skin connective-tissue matrix. The dermis contains 50% of body HA. It forms an elastic viscous fluid matrix in which collagen and elastin fibers are embedded. The nature of HA attracts and maintains water within the extracellular space, so much so that around 1 gram of HA can bind 6 Liters of water. HA is the ultimate solution for moisture retention in the skin. Youthful skin is hydrated because it contains large amounts of HA in the dermis. However, as we age, the amount of HA in the skin decreases. In a clinical trial, it was shown that in the subjects treated with HA for 10 days, hydration increased by 35% and radiance increased by 27% as compared to subject which received saline water. The treatment also reduced wrinkles by 10% from baseline. The Investigator found that NA improved the aesthetic aspect on 82% of subjects whereas no improvement was found on control side. In another study, after 42 days of treatment with a formulation containing HA and vitamins, there was an 12% increase in skin hydration and viscoelasticity, a 23% increase in skin density, a 27% increase in skin microcirculation, and a significant lightening and whitening of skin color. 87% of subjects found their skin more beautiful, 85% would recommend this treatment, and more than 50% found their face rejuvenated.
